How the sizes are worked out

Cutting plan on 2440 × 1220 sheets

Laid out by the CutRun calculator with a 3 mm saw kerf and 10 mm trimmed off the factory edges.

46 % of the board ends up in the furniture. The last sheet has a large piece left over — plan extra shelves, a drawer or a second small cabinet into the same order.

Assembly order

  1. Band the edges: doors all round, the rest on the front edge.
  2. Drill shelf-pin rows in the sides so the shelf spacing can follow boots and sneakers.
  3. Assemble the carcass, nail on the back.
  4. Insert the shelves, hang the doors.

Questions

How many sheets do I need for a shoe cabinet?

A 900 × 1000 × 300 mm version in 18 mm board needs 2 sheets of 2440 × 1220 mm: 2.73 m² of board and about 11.8 m of edge banding. The 3 mm HDF back is cut from a separate thin sheet.

How deep should a shoe cabinet be?

300 mm for shoes standing straight, 350–400 mm if you want boots or large sizes to fit. Tilted shelves allow about 200 mm.

How many pairs fit?

About five to six pairs per 900 mm shelf, so 15–18 pairs on three shelves plus the bottom.
