How the sizes are worked out

Cutting plan on 2440 × 1220 sheets

Laid out by the CutRun calculator with a 3 mm saw kerf and 10 mm trimmed off the factory edges.

Sheet 1: Side, Drawer front, Top, Bottom, Plinth, Drawer side, Drawer front/back
Sheet 1 · Side, Drawer front, Top, Bottom, Plinth, Drawer side, Drawer front/back
Sheet 2: Drawer front, Drawer front/back, Drawer side
Sheet 2 · Drawer front, Drawer front/back, Drawer side

58 % of the board ends up in the furniture. The last sheet has a large piece left over — plan extra shelves, a drawer or a second small cabinet into the same order.

Assembly order

  1. Band the edges: the drawer fronts all round, the carcass and the box tops on the front edge.
  2. Build the carcass with the back nailed on — a square carcass makes the drawers run smoothly.
  3. Screw the slides to the sides, measuring every height from the bottom, not from the previous slide.
  4. Build the boxes, nail on the bottoms and check the diagonals; fit them on the slides.
  5. Screw the fronts on from inside, starting at the bottom, with 3 mm spacers between them.

Questions

How many sheets do I need for a chest of drawers?

A 800 × 900 × 450 mm version in 18 mm board needs 2 sheets of 2440 × 1220 mm: 3.48 m² of board and about 20.1 m of edge banding. The 3 mm HDF back is cut from a separate thin sheet.

How wide are the drawer boxes in an 800 mm chest?

With side-mount ball-bearing slides (13 mm per side) and 18 mm board the outer box width is 764 − 26 = 738 mm; the front and back pieces between the box sides are 702 mm.

Why are the drawers different heights?

Lower drawers hold heavier, bulkier things; graduated fronts (250 → 170 mm) also look balanced. You can set any heights in the cabinet builder.

Need a different size? Open this design in the cabinet builder, type your own width, height and depth or change shelves, drawers and doors — the cut list and the drawing update as you go. Then send it to the calculator for your own sheet size.
